An Honest Assessment: Bath and Body

The how and why of why we started using The Honest Company products is a long story, but we are SO glad to have discovered this brand, and could not be happier with most of their products. This series will focus on three of the four of Honest Co.’s product categories: Baby, Bath & Body and Cleaning. The fourth category is Health and Wellness, of which I haven’t used any products.

Diapers

E started out in Pampers Sensitive Swaddlers (we didn’t switch to cloth diapers till she was about 12 weeks old). We had your basic leaks, up the back blowouts and diaper rashes. But as new parents, we thought that was normal; everyone complains about those things! So I bought a $15.00 all-natural diaper rash balm and we dealt with it.

However, the last straw was when E was seven months old and we drove from California to Texas. We chose to use disposables for the drive, and by the morning of day two E had open, weeping sores on her entire diaper area. It was horrifying. She was still breastfed, so we were stopping at very regular intervals to feed and change her. We slathered on her (non-Honest) over-priced diaper rash balm, put her back in cloth diapers, and finished up our trip with a wetbag of dirty cloth diapers in the trunk (the very thing we had hoped to avoid by using disposables in the first place). As soon as we got back to California I went in to a local store and bought a package of Honest diapers and haven’t looked back.

Shampoo & Body Wash

This is a hypoallergenic, non-toxic, orange-vanilla scented wash that cleans E’s hair very well. It also lathers well, and is a nice stand-in for bubble bath (bubbles are all that matter when you’re a toddler).

Conditioning Detangler

This is a product I bought for E, but use for my own hair after every shower! It’s a non-greasy leave-in detangler that works very well on my dry, wavy hair (it’s safe for color-treated hair, too). Of course, we use it on E’s hair after her evening baths, too.

Sunscreen (SPF 30)

This summer I was on a hunt for a non-greasy, non-nano and non-toxic alternative to drugstore sunscreens that would actually work! Honest Co. met and exceeded my criteria. E had no reactions when we used this product, and it kept her burn-free when we would spend hours at the splash pad and parks over the summer. *It is recommended that this product be reapplied after every 40 minutes of swimming or sweating.

Bug Spray

This is one product that I am on the fence about. It worked well enough, but the scent was something my pregnant nose couldn’t get over. However, it is one of the few natural options out there (it’s formulated with organic essential oils, and is both vegan and hypoallergenic), so it’s what we use.

Organic Body Oil

We used this when E went through a period of full body baby-acne. Her poor skin was so dry and broken out, but I didn’t trust traditional manufactured oils on her skin (mineral oil? Ew!). Unfortunately, this body oil did not help E, so I ended up using it as leg moisturizer after I would shave (no red bumps-yay). Then, at the very end of my third trimester of pregnancy, I became unbearably itchy and would mix the body oil with some lavender oil to sooth my skin.  It was a heaven-sent, long term, instant relief, kind-of- cure! It is hypoallergenic, vegan, and certified organic!

Bubble Bath

A great alternative to the traditional toxic bubble baths out there! Honest Co. bubbles makes long lasting, great smelling, and gentle bubbles that are tear-free, hypoallergenic, and pH balanced.

Face & Body Lotion

This lotion is silky-smooth, hypoallergenic, and is the only natural lotion we have found that doesn’t make E’s skin burn when applied over dry or irritated areas. Again, this lotion is vegan, pH balanced, and non-toxic.

Hand Soap (in Mandarin)

Wonderfully moisturizing, natural, and great smelling- we really like this soap! It lathers well, though less than traditional liquid hand soap.

Toothpaste (in Fresh Mint)

After learning about the carcinogens in regular toothpaste, I made the switch to this brand (about 13 months ago). While it doesn’t foam as much as my old toothpaste, my teeth feel just as clean and look just as white. Plus, when E brushes her teeth I don’t need to have a separate paste for her.

Mouthwash

Just like my husband’s Listerine mouthwash, it leaves my mouth squeaky clean and feeling fresh for hours. But unlike my husband’s mouthwash, this is a non-alcohol based mouthwash with NO fluoride or artificial sweeteners, flavors, or dyes.

Organic Belly Balm

This balm is so very moisturizing, which is great, but takes a while to fully soak in. The smell is a little strong, but it was so soothing on my growing belly that I didn’t mind. It is a little greasy, but not in an oily way. It is marketed as a “toning balm to help prevent stretch marks and improve elasticity,” however I cannot speak to the validity of that statement since I used a different product when I was pregnant with E and didn’t get any stretch marks with her.

These products have worked wonderfully for my family, but please remember that these are based on our personal experiences, and yours may be different.

One Response to An Honest Assessment: Bath and Body

  1. We’ve just recently switched from California Baby’s Calendula Bath Wash to the bath wash from The Honest Company since our Costco carries it. As much as I love CA Baby, it’s expensive! So far we’re loving Honest’s bath wash, and my boys smell like orange creamsicles!
