DIY Scrapbook Paper Mobile

I consider myself a fairly creative person and I love to be crafty when I can find the time. When I found out I was pregnant with my first son, I went a little DIY-crazy. DIY Scrapbook Paper Mobile

I made wooden letters covered with scrapbook paper to display his name, closet organizers, no-sew curtains and a mobile. I considered making my own crib skirt, but wasn’t feeling ambitious enough.

This time around, I significantly cut down my “bucket list.” It consisted of putting the baby’s room together and DIYing a mobile.

At 35+ weeks pregnant, both were finally done —whew! Putting the room together took quite a while, but the mobile only took about two hours.

I browsed inspiration from Etsy and found some adorable mobiles that I would have loved to purchase if the sky was the limit. I also found some great inspiration on Pinterest and settled on making a mobile out of ribbon and paper. I have a love affair with polka dots so incorporating dots and circles in the mobile was a must.

  • Embroidery hoop
  • Glue gun and extra glue
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Ribbon
  • Hook or screw to hang the mobile from the ceiling
  • Cricut machine, die-cut machine or a tracer, pencil and scissors

To Assemble:

  • Using a die-cut machine (or a Cricut), cut circles of varying sizes out of scrapbook paper. To make mine, I cut large circles (about 4 inches in diameter) and small circles (about 1 inch in diameter).

If you don’t have access to a die cut machine or a Cricut, you can use a tracer of any kind and lightly trace around the tracer on to scrapbook paper using a pencil and then carefully cut the circles out. However, this would expand the project well beyond two hours.

  • Cut eight pieces of ribbon of varying lengths. To make mine, I cut four pieces of red ribbon and four pieces of green polka dot ribbon.
  • Using a hot glue gun, glue circles on either side of the ribbon spaced apart how you wish. To make mine, I glued the scrapbook circles on top of each other on either side of the ribbon. I glued two or three large circles and two or three small circles on each of the eight ribbons.

  • Glue the tops of each of the eight ribbons evenly spaced around the top of the embroidery hoop so they hang down.

  • Glue an additional four pieces of ribbon and gather above the embroidery hoop in order to hang the mobile.
  • Tie the additional four pieces of ribbon with one more ribbon to keep the pieces together. Use the tie to hang your mobile from the ceiling.

…and it’s as easy as that! The entire mobile took me less than two hours to make. I chose to hang it so when my newest little man is having his diaper changed, he’ll have something pretty his mama made to look at.

It could also easily be hung over your kiddo’s crib.

This mobile is perfect for a penny-pinching mama’s budget as well. The embroidery hoop was $2.50 and the green ribbon was less than $2. I already had lots of red ribbon, tons of scrapbook paper from other projects, a glue gun and access to a die cut machine at school. So out-of-pocket, this mobile cost less than $5 to make.

Happy crafting!
