DIY Sharpie Mug

I was looking around the house one day for a fun, easy craft I could do with my two-year-old daughter. We had a couple plain white mugs, so I decided we’d make a ‘designer coffee mug,’ designed, of course, by my little girl! I’ve been seeing the DIY Sharpie Mug around Pinterest, so we gave it a try.

I grabbed some Sharpies and let her make a masterpiece. This would make a fabulous gift for dad or grandparents! This specific mug is for me, though, so mama can drink her coffee in style!

Materials Needed:

  • Sharpie markers
  • Plain white ceramic mug
  • Oven

Directions:

  • First, make sure your mug is washed and clean. Then, try to get as much of the oil off the mug as possible. You can use rubbing alcohol or non-acetone nail polish remover and just wipe the entire mug. If you can, try to have your little one not touch the mug too much with her fingers.
  • Let your little one color on the mug using Sharpie markers! An older child could write something, (‘World’s Best Dad,’ maybe?) or draw a picture. Younger ones can do some scribbles or shapes.

  • When the drawing is finished, put your mug in a COLD oven. Then turn the oven to 350 degrees F. You want the mug to heat up slowly so it doesn’t crack from the temperature change! Set the timer for 30 minutes after the oven reaches 350 degrees.
  • After 30 minutes, turn the oven off but do not take the mug out. Let the mug cool while still sitting in the oven.
  • Once cool, take a wet cloth and try to wipe the marker off. If it comes off easily, stick it back in the oven for another 20-30 minutes. If it sticks, voila— you’re done!

Notes:

  • We used pastel colored Sharpie markers because that’s all we had at the time. As a result, the colors faded a lot in the oven. It’s still beautiful, but you might get brighter results with regular colored markers.
  • Be prepared for some color change after the mug comes out of the oven! For example, the purple marker turned out red on our mug.

  • We’ve only hand-washed our mug, so far. If you try washing it in the top rack of the dishwasher, please leave a comment below let us know the results!
