Father’s Day Photo Collage

When my husband’s first Father’s Day came around, my son was about eight months old and I was stumped on what to get for him. I ended up getting him a card and that was it.

The following year I wanted to do better. In our mama forum, a few mamas posted photo collage ideas using wooden letters and I suddenly knew what I was making for my husband that year.

One evening, before my husband came home from work, I dressed my 20-month-old son in a shirt that my husband loved and tried my best to snap photos of him with the letters DADDY. It was hard! My son had no interest in holding the letters or in sitting still to smile for the camera.

I was able to prop the letters on the stool a few times and the only way I was able to get him to smile was to stick a lemon inside his shirt and snap away as he tickled himself trying to get it out.

After picking out best images from the group I found a ready-made frame at Jo-Ann’s that was long and skinny (and used a 40% off coupon!). I splurged a bit and ordered a custom mat for the ready-made frame. I stuck the photos together in Photoshop, printed the photo with my photo printer, and put it all together.

I was very pleased with the final result, and so was my husband. It still hangs proudly on the wall in his office.

It’s been two years since I made that collage, so I pulled out the letters and made another one for Father’s Day this year. Given that my son is three-and-a-half now, he was much more cooperative when taking photos… but there was still some bribing involved.

I also made one that says GRANDPA for my dad. I really hope he doesn’t read this before Sunday!

UPDATE: I have decided to do this collage every other year and as of 2014, we had another son! Doing this collage last Father’s Day proved to be the hardest one yet, it was chaos getting both boys to stay in one spot. I finally gave up and tried my best to get some funny photos of the two of them. They really show each boy’s personality at that time and I love how it turned out.

Here are some of the other Father’s Day photo ideas that fellow mamas made with their babies; lots of different ideas for photos and frames. Don’t be afraid to scour the framing sections of a few different stores to find the right kind of frame for what you have in mind.

Wishing a heartfelt and happy Father’s Day to all of daddies, grandpas, and partners out there! We love you!
