J’s Bright Pink and Blue Nursery

Check out this owl-themed nursery with so many bright and colorful prints and fabrics! J’s mama, Ellen, is the amazing mama to five kiddos, a self-proclaimed Mormon Army Wife, and a dear friend I have known longer than I care to admit (ok, over 20 years). She hails from western Washington and in her spare time (she has spare time?!) is a Zumba instructor.

How did you decide what theme or style you wanted for the room?

I don’t tend to like having what everyone else has and I’m lucky to have a sister who used to have a business in making custom baby bedding. So she and I had a date and went to the fabric store together. We picked out several cute prints that went really well together, I paid for them and she took them home to sew up a storm! She was making everything but the bumper pad…. but unfortunately, I couldn’t find a bumper pad that worked with the custom-made crib set.

What are the main colors?

Light blue and bright pink.

How did you bring it all together? Inspiration boards, Pinterest, all in your head?

The inspiration really came from the main fabric of the custom bedding. It has little owls and birdies in it. I absolutely fell in love with the print and all the others that we picked to compliment it. From there, the theme naturally came together… .owls and birdies! I don’t usually like to follow trends or do what’s popular, but I couldn’t help myself… plus, owls and birdies are easy to find these days.

Where did you find the key elements and fun details?

I ventured into Babies ‘R Us a few times and kept noticing the owl/birdie bed set, but would dismiss it, thinking it wouldn’t work. Finally, two weeks from my due date, still without a bumper, I caved and bought the owl/birdie bumper pad AND a matching wall decal. I took them home and was amazed… and SO pleased… because everything fit perfectly together!

How did you keep your room budget-friendly?

The room was already light blue and I decided ahead of time that whatever fabric we chose for the custom bedding, had to go with the color so I wouldn’t have to repaint. I’m so glad I did that! All I had to do was patch a few holes and paint over it. Buying the fabric (using coupons) and having my sister make the bedding (as a gift to me) surely saved a lot. Some decor in the room came from my baby shower (which was light blue and bright pink). My best friend made the baby shower decor so it makes it extra special to have in there. J is my fifth baby, so the crib has been through each of my children, as well as other furniture.

What do you love most about the room?

It is so bright, happy and girly… exactly what I wanted. It’s not what I initially envisioned but everything came together like a puzzle, so perfectly.

Did anyone else give any input on the room?

Well, my awesome sister of course, made the bedding. My husband helped move furniture around and patch the walls up. My best friend helped with some of the decor.

What advice would you give to other mamas about how to make their dream room a reality?

Do what YOU love. Don’t do what everyone else is doing just because, well, everyone else is doing it. Think about what colors make you feel happy and relaxed. When you think of your baby, does a theme come to mind? Any particular colors, animals, objects? Walk through a fabric store and look at print for inspiration on colors and themes… it doesn’t mean you have to sew something, just get inspired! And of course, check out Pinterest. I didn’t do that, but it is a great way to get ideas if you feel stuck.
