Photo Book: Toddler’s Best Friend

When I was a child, we always had at least one dog. I loved playing ball with them, snuggling with them, hiking with them, really doing anything at all with them. Some of my happiest childhood memories included our dogs.

Late in 2006, I moved into my first apartment on my own. Shortly after, I made the decision to get a dog. I went with a Beagle/Boston Terrier mix, small, but still able to go hiking, running and tolerate apartment living. I named her Lucy. She was great, minus a few chewing incidents! I remember one day a few years later while on a hike, I looked at her, and it suddenly dawned on me… I would still have Lucy when the day came that I (hopefully) would have children, and I hoped my future child would be able to have the same relationship with her that I had with my childhood dogs.

Fast forward to December 2010, and my little man was born. We brought the hospital blanket home first to let Lucy smell it, and were on constant watch with her and little man for the first few weeks. Lucy instantly took to little man, and him to her. Watching their relationship progress has been so sweet.

Since that day, they’ve gone from tummy time together to hiking and kayaking together. Little Man will ask me if he can walk Lucy when we get home. One of his daily chores is to feed her. They snuggle when he is sick. Lucy waits outside his bedroom door each morning while he still sleeps (on the nights she doesn’t sleep with him).

Little man is almost four. Lucy is almost eight. While I hope we still have quite a few years together, I realized recently that when the sad day comes that Lucy passes, Little Man will have, literally, spent his entire life with her at his side.

I started compiling most of the photos that I had collected over the last few years of the two of them together. With access to so many affordable photo book sites, I thought it would be nice to create a photo book for Little Man show casing all the fun times they have had together.

While he is still little and may not understand or appreciate it now, I hope it will be able to give him solace when she, hopefully in many years, passes.
