DIY Tile Coasters

While browsing Pinterest, I found many tutorials to make these adorable DIY coasters using only a few materials.

I’ve played around with making a few different kinds with scrapbook paper and photographs.

They make sweet gifts for teachers, neighbors, birthdays and on any other gift giving occasion. They’re easy, but a little time consuming.

  • white 4×4 ceramic tiles (from Home Depot or Lowes)
  • scrapbook paper or photographs
  • scissors or a paper cutter
  • Modge Podge
  • paintbrush
  • acrylic sealer
  • felt pads
  • hot glue gun

1. Clean the tiles with a paper towel or damp cloth.

2.  Cut the scrapbook paper or photographs to be slightly smaller than the face of the tile, to leave a thin white edge.

3. Using the paint brush, spread a thin layer of Modge Podge on the tile.

4. Lay the paper or photographs on the top and smooth them over with your finger or a sharp edge (like a credit card). *Do not skip this step! Otherwise the paper or pictures will bubble or wrinkle. Let dry (up to an hour or more).

5. Spread a layer of Modge Podge over the top and let dry (don’t worry that it looks white – it will dry clear).

6. Repeat with several layers of Modge Podge. I usually do three layers on top, total.

7. Spray the top with a coat of acrylic sealer. Let dry (up to one hour or more) in a well-ventilated area.

8. Repeat with another layer of sealer.

9. Using a hot glue gun, adhere four small felt pads to the bottom of the coasters to prevent scratching any furniture.

Voila! You just made a very cheap and cute gift. If you don’t feel like you have the time to make your own, you can find many on Etsy – including in my Etsy shop!

Happy Crafting!
