Summer Sangria

Don’t let the title fool you— this yummy and fruity drink is refreshing in winter, spring, summer or fall!

Though I’m not a big drinker, I like to enjoy an occasional glass of Sangria for a special occasion. I whipped this up the other night for my sister-in-laws’ bridal shower dinner and it was a hit! It’s perfect for lounging poolside in the hot summer or as an end to a night out with the hubby.

This recipe is so forgiving and easily customized to whatever fruit you have in the fridge. Since there is so much delicious fresh fruit available all summer long, the possibilities for how you make your sangria are endless.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. strawberries, cut
  • 1 apple, cut (I showed two in the picture, but only ended up needing one)
  • 1 lemon, sliced (some can be saved for garnish)
  • 1 mango, peeled and cut
  • 2 Clementine oranges (any oranges would be delicious – Clementines were what we had in the fridge)
  • 1-2 bottles of red wine
  • 1 cup of Triple Sec or Cointreau
  • Seltzer water, Ginger Ale, Sprite or Sierra Mist soda

Directions:

1. Add the bottle of red wine to a pitcher.
2. Cut up fruit and add it to the wine.

3. Add the Triple Sec or Cointreau.

4. Stir and cover. Let it sit in the fridge over night or for a few hours.

5. When ready to serve, add soda for some bubble and fizz! I like it because it sweetens up the red wine a bit (which is usually a drier wine). If you don’t want it sweeter, then use seltzer water instead. I left a 2-liter bottle of Diet Sierra Mist out next to the Sangria so that everyone could add their own. Some guests didn’t add any.

6. Sip and enjoy!

Notes:
Great tip: I used one bottle because there were only six people at our party, but this could easily be made with two bottles.

When choosing a wine: I chose a cheap red wine — it doesn’t make sense to me to get something pricey because you’re going to be adding other ingredients and the taste will change.
