30-Minute DIY Christmas Gift Manicure

This DIY manicure is festive and cute, in a very classy way.

You know how beautiful your living room looks when you wake up on Christmas morning and lots of pretty, wrapped presents are packed under the tree? This manicure is a little tribute to that beauty!

It takes a little more time than the other I recently wrote about, but it is just as easy. All you need is two colors and a craft paintbrush.

You likely already have a long, thin paintbrush if you have a kid’s craft set, but if not, they’re only .20 to .90 cents at a craft store or Target. You can also use a polish that comes specifically with a long skinny brush for art details.

I did this particular manicure on my mama’s nails, because I had done mine yesterday for another tutorial I posted. But trust me — it is easy to DIY for your own nails… I’ve done it before!

We chose to do red “gifts” with silver “ribbon.” You could easily do any other color combination, or even mix it up and do various color “gifts.” We also chose to have the ribbon tied in a different position on each nail; of course you could do it the same on each as well!

What you’ll need:

  • A long, skinny craft paintbrush OR a bottle of polish with a long, skinny brush
  • Red polish
  • Silver or glitter polish

Of course, feel free to substitute colors and designs or come up with something on your own.

First you’ll need to cut, file and shape your nails.

If you choose, apply a base coat to your nails. This is recommended if you plan on using a glitter polish, however, it is not necessary.

Paint your nails using a solid color(s). Wait until they are completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Take the brush out of the ribbon polish color and place it aside on a paper towel. Carefully dip your craft brush straight into the bottle of polish and gently wipe off the excess paint on the side of the bottle, like you would if you were using the regular polish brush.

With a steady hand, draw one straight line from the bed of your nail to the tip. This isn’t as difficult as it seems, even if you don’t have a steady hand, because you are using a long, skinny brush. It’s really as simple as one stroke.

Next, draw another single straight line across the first line, from left to right.

Draw a “V” shape pointing up at the center of where the two lines meet to create the bow on the ribbon. If you choose, you can get fancy and make ovals to create an open bow, but I find a simple “V” works best and looks really nice.

Optionally, top it all off with a top-coat and…voila! Enjoy all the compliments you’ll receive when you tell friends and family you did your own manicure design in just a few minutes!

What I used:

Base coat: Revlon Multi-Care 965
Red: Maybelline Ultimate Wear Red Hot Rouge
Silver: Milani with Nail Art Precision Brush – Art of Silver
Top Coat: Seche Vite
