Mama Say What?! reader Alexandra F. asks: “How did you find a babysitter?”

We have only ever used family/friends to watch our kids. Luckily our family is all within ten miles of our home and normally SOMEone is available to come and babysit. I usually switch off who I ask depending on who did it last. ~Melissa T.

I’ve only left Anna for a couple hours, once, to watch a movie. She went over to my friend’s house with her daughter. The other time she was with my sister and her son for a couple hours when I went out for a bachelorette party. Other than that she’s only ever stayed with my hubby. I imagine that once we have two or more kids, I will look into babysitting more. I know Anna would like to spend some more time with her grandparents who live about 15 minutes away. ~Jessica S.

My husband and I will only leave our daughter with people we know personally and believe we can trust. We don’t have to have known them for a decade, but we want to have spent time with them already before we leave Maggie alone with them. So we tend to swap childcare with other parents a lot. Sometimes we hire a high-schooler who we know is reliable (like one of my violin students, who unfortunately went off to college this fall). But there always needs to be some kind of established relationship there. ~Christina D.

We have only left our daughter a handful of times since she was born. Living across the country from our families means Elizabeth’s aunt and grandparents can’t be called, but we are lucky enough to have a few very close and wonderful friends who don’t mind swapping babysitting duties once in a while. ~Michelle W.

We’re lucky that we both have lots of family and friends that live close by and are always willing to watch my daughter. We try and alternate between people so we’re not asking the same person over and over. ~Kathy S.

We have also only ever used family members or close friends whom our son knows well. Given that we don’t live close to our family, I imagine the day will come where we will need to find an actual babysitter who is new to us. When that happens, we will likely ask for recommendations from our neighbors first (they have three kids), and then consider a website like SitterCity. ~Alex T.

We have only used friends, family, and our next-door neighbor - who also watches our nephew. ~Miriam R.
