Healthy Smoothies for Mama and Baby

Smoothies are an almost daily snack in our house — I’ve been drinking them for years, but since Little Man has been about a year old, he’s had a fascination with the blender.

When he sees me getting the ingredients together, or even when I say, “Do you want to make a … SMOOTHIE?!” he starts laughing and clapping and stares at blender on the counter.

Now that he’s a toddler and is proficient at drinking from a straw, he enjoys them with me! Smoothies are especially great for toddlers on the go who don’t want to stop playing to eat a whole meal. I’ve even found a way to sneak some veggies in — trust me… you would never know. (Sneaky mama!)

Strawberry Banana Smoothie

  • 1/3 cup frozen strawberries with Splenda, thawed (I buy this from my local grocery store because I like using the juice it comes with. You could certainly use fresh, especially if you’re making this for the little ones.)
  • ½ banana, sliced
  • 1/3 cup almond milk (or any kind of milk)
  • 3 oz. of fat free yogurt (I like using vanilla, but anything will work.)
  • 4 ice cubes
  • A handful of fresh spinach

To make, simply add the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth! You can add more or less ice depending on how thick you want it. The spinach gives it a greenish tint, but you can’t taste it. And if you add a handful of blackberries, you won’t see the green at all. This makes one large smoothie for just mama, or a small one for each mama and baby.
Other fruit combinations to try:

  • Strawberries and blackberries
  • Bananas and pears
  • Raspberries and mangoes

Other ingredients you could add:

  • Honey (only if your little one is older than one year!)
  • Peanut butter (only if your little one is older than one year!)
  • Carrots or other veggies
  • Almonds
  • Dates
