Britax Chaperone Review

I love our Britax Chaperone infant car seat! When hubby and I started looking at car seats, we quickly determined that Britax was one of the safest brands out there.

We specifically chose the Chaperone over the B-Safe for two reasons. The first was the Chaperone’s ‘true side impact protection,’ meaning in the event of a crash, our daughter’s side-to-side head and body movement are more reduced. The second reason was for the anti-rebound bar, which is attached to the seat base. The bar “is used to stabilize the car seat in the event of a collision, significantly reducing the distance it will rotate and preventing your child’s head from contacting the back of the vehicle seat.”

Our daughter loves being in her seat and always seems very comfortable and snug, but not too enclosed. The sunshade provides ample coverage and is easy to adjust, even when I’m driving.

Removing the seat cover for washing is a streamlined process that only requires you to unhook part of the harness, versus removing it completely. The cover also air-dries quickly, much to my surprise. I left it out to dry overnight and had been expecting a slightly damp cover in the morning. But the cover was perfectly dry and I was able to reassemble the seat with in just a few minutes.

Both my husband and I are very happy with our Chaperone and will absolutely be using it when we have our second child.

Pros:

  • The Chaperone has very high safety ratings.
  • It is compatible to snap into all Britax strollers.
  • The Chaperone features an anti-rebound bar to reduce seat rotation in the event of a crash.
  • No re-thread harness. A great time-saving feature when you suddenly realize your newborn has grown overnight!
  • 30-pound weight limit, 32-inch height limit.
  • A comfortable and contoured carrying handle makes it less awkward to tote around than other infant seats we tested out.

Cons:

  • No harness holders.
  • The Chaperone is wider than many other infant seats. This can be a problem when trying to fit the seat into a restaurant booth.
  • The “Low Birth Weight Foam Insert” comes pre-installed. While recommended for babies weighing between four and 11 pounds, our 6.2-pound daughter did not fit in the car seat while the insert was installed.
  • When installed with the base, the Chaperone system is a long seat. The seat fits very comfortably in my husbands’ four-door truck, but it is a tight squeeze in my 4Runner.
