C’s Painting Party 2nd Birthday

MSW mama Cassie wanted a fun but flexible party theme for her daughter’s second birthday. Getting in touch with her creative side, she came up with a fun and unique idea for her little girl and her friends —a painting party! Painting everything, like faces and cupcakes, made for an amazing time for everyone, and was a ton of fun for the kids. This easy-going mama created memories her baby girl will carry with her for a lifetime!

What inspired the theme of the celebration?

I wanted to come up with a fun and flexible party theme. Since most of my little girl’s friends are boys, I excluded themes that revolved around princesses and other super girly things. I sat down and thought about the things C likes, and considered an arts and crafts party. But since she was only turning two and I didn’t think many of her little friends would sit still long enough to do different arts and crafts, I narrowed it down a bit and we decided on a “painting party.”

We had the paint-your-own cupcakes, face painting, a giant whiteboard with markers, a giant chalkboard with chalk, a custom birthday party coloring page and crayons, blank canvases and finger paint, and a cake in the shape of a painting palette. C wore a white dress; I had hopes of her splattering it with lots of paint colors, but she was too worried about getting messy.

What was one element of the celebration that you are particularly proud of?

I’m proud that I ended up getting pretty creative with it while sticking with the theme ‘painting.’ And I’m also pretty proud of C’s ‘stat board,’ which I made with chalkboard paint and chalkboard markers. I worked so hard on it and love the way it turned out! Oh— and also the invitations and thank you cards, which I designed myself!

What was your favorite moment of the celebration?

My favorite part was probably the face painting. It was fun to attempt making the kids into lions or tigers or Spiderman, and the kids thought it was awesome.

What was the birthday girl’s favorite moment of the celebration?

The best part of the party for C, I think, was when the kids all painted canvases. Each child got a blank canvas and we set out little cups of paint, paintbrushes and paint palettes. We let the kids go to town! It got messy and it was fabulous. The kids took them home as favors, too!

Is there anything you wish you would have done differently? If so, what?

The cake! I made a practice cake in the shape of a paint palette a few days before the party and it turned out perfectly. The morning of the party, I tried to replicate it and failed miserably. The cake was literally falling apart and melting around the corners, and it was a sloppy mess. I fixed it up the best I could and just went with it.

What advice would you give to other party planners?

Have fun with your party! Don’t stress about minor things (like your cake falling apart!). Just let your little one enjoy his or her big day!
