Easy DIY Tie-Dye Butterflies Craft

This is a cute, fun craft for kids of all ages. Make your very own tie-dye colored butterflies!

Supplies needed:

  • Coffee filters
  • Markers
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Newspaper (this project gets a bit messy!)
  • Pipe cleaners

Layer the newspaper under your work space.

We started by putting our coffee filters on the paper and coloring them with the markers. The paper underneath was a big table saver because the markers do bleed through the thin coffee filters.

It seemed the more colorful we made our coffee filters with the markers, the cooler our tie-dye effect was! What’s very nice about this part is that a child of any age who can handle a marker can do this!

I had a four-year-old assistant for this project. She scribbled until she couldn’t scribble anymore, and she loved every moment of it!

Then we grabbed out squirt bottle and put it on “spray” instead of “stream.” The stream setting works, but it soaked them way more than was needed. We gently sprayed and sprayed until the colors ran together and made some cool designs. (Another reason to layer the newspaper under your work area!)

Our results: pretty, colorful filters!

We moved the filters out of our work space and let them dry for a couple of hours in the sun.

My little one was able to help with this next part, but it took a little more adult patience. We gently gathered the center of our dried, tie-dyed coffee filter and pinched. She then picked a pipe cleaner in the color of her choice. We made the butterfly’s body by wrapping the pipe cleaner around the pinched center and twisting it together.

We thought our butterflies needed antennas so, we curled the ends!

Viola! Beautiful, easy, tie-dyed butterflies!
