Gavin’s Circus of a 2nd Birthday Party

MSW mama, Melissa, threw an awesome circus-themed birthday party for her two-year-old son, Gavin. She made it stress-free by having it at Gymboree and by planning and buying things in advance. This amazing mama pulled off a great party while she was seven months pregnant! Come one, come all, and read about Gavin’s Circus of a Birthday!

What inspired the theme of your child’s party?

We decided to have Gavin’s second birthday at Gymboree Play and Music for a couple of reasons: One, I was seven months pregnant and didn’t want to be overwhelmed and overloaded with putting on a party all on my own. I knew with Gymboree they would entertain the kids, everyone would have fun, and it would be minimal work for me. Two, I went with a Circus theme as “Gymbo” is a clown, and the theme just fit. Gavin loved it and it totally took off. It was so easy to find decorations and things that fit with the theme.

What was one element of the party that you are particularly proud of?

I think just how it all came together. I kind of just threw the party together and I was really happy with how everything turned out and how it all worked out. Everyone had a good time, and Gavin loved it. The only thing I wish I would have done differently is to have taken more pictures of everything. There were a bunch of cute little elements that I don’t have any pictures of.

Did you work with any vendors? If so who and what did you like about them?

I got the invitations and thank you cards from Etsy.com. PaperPenguinDesign did the invitations and LaurenHaddoxDesign did the custom thank you cards. I ordered Gavin a train T-shirt with the number “two” from Revolution46R46 that went really well with the theme and custom vintage circus-themed popcorn bags from Etsy seller DimeStoreBuddy. My parents have a vintage popcorn machine that we set out to make popcorn for everyone to eat. I ordered goody bags from Amazon as favors, they were filled with glow stick bracelets, temporary circus tattoos and bubbles. The paper products and some decorations came from Party City. Gymboree provided us with stickers for the goody bags, one hour of play time for the kids, and one hour for pizza and cupcakes in the party room. I ordered the pizzas from Little Ceasars and made the cupcakes myself with my sister-in-law.

What was your favorite moment/part of the party?

I think just watching my “baby” having so much fun. He loves Gymboree, so picking this location was perfect for him. I also loved watching him interact with his “friends.” It was too cute.

What was your birthday boy’s favorite part?

I think my favorite parts were playing all the games, dancing with the “Gymbo” clown, and eating pizza!

Can you give any advice to mamas that are planning a party for their little one?

You don’t have to do it all yourself. I booked Gymboree, and besides bringing everything and setting up, they did everything for us, and it was a blast. It was awesome, especially being seven months pregnant, to have the party at a place that had staff to help me. I started early buying things, organizing, and getting the ideas sorted out in my head.
