Katie’s Spring Fresh Birthday Party

Mama Say What?! reader Angie is incredibly crafty. She makes adorable hand-made things for her daughter, and the party decor was no exception. Her “spring fresh” colors— pink and yellow— reminds me of delicious pink lemonade and her beautiful little girl was the star of this adorable first birthday party.

What inspired the theme of your child’s party?

I really liked yellow and pink together, it seemed girly and “spring fresh,” as her birthday is at the end of March!

What was one element of the party that you are particularly proud of?

I am proud of the things that I hand-made. I made her shirt, bib and a few decorations. I hope she looks back at the photos when she’s older and says, “mama made me special things, and she’s a WAY better crafter now,” that would be awesome.

Did you work with any vendors? If so, who? And what did you like about them?

I did not work with any vendors; I was determined to make her cake myself, even if it was just boxed cake!

After FOUR, (YES, FOUR!) failed attempts at making a Betty Crocker white cake (all of which flopped and I almost went crazy), my husband ran out and bought two boxes of Duncan Hines confetti cake mix. We baked it last-minute and had it frosted ten minutes before guests started arriving. Phew!

In hindsight it would have been nice to have someone make that for me. But the lemon filling and raspberry cream cheese icing was pretty fantastic!

What was your favorite moment/part of the party?

My favorite part was singing Happy Birthday to our daughter, she is so precious to us. We made it through a whole year of ups, downs, firsts, diapers, travel, fun and adventure!

What was your birthday girl’s favorite part?

She had a special guest who came to visit for a WHOLE MONTH, her Grammie! :)

Can you give any advice to mamas that are planning a party for their little one?

Keep the party focused on your kid. Nobody will fuss too much over your venue, giveaways or snacks. Your guests are there to celebrate!
