Makenna’s Classic Gray and Pink Nursery

How did you decide what theme or style you wanted for the room?

I wanted a classic girly type feel to the room, but I also wanted it to be elegant and not to overdone and crowded. My original plan was to keep it simple and base the “theme” around colors. I wanted whites and greys with some accents of pink for a cool, clean look. However, one day I was browsing the internet and came across a bedding set on Carousel.com that had this amazing Cheveron pattern material - from then on I was sold and based everything off of that concept. I first chose the paint color; we went with Bher’s Silver Screen and it looked fantastic once on the wall. The Cheveron patterned material went perfectly with it. I then decided on the crib, dresser and rocking chair. After that it was easy to find the decorative accents to bring everything together. We plan to hang canvases of her newborn pictures over the crib once she is here.

What are the main colors?

I wanted to keep this simple. The main colors are pink, light grey, dark grey and white.

How did you bring it all together? Inspiration boards, Pinterest, all in your head?

Before I even knew I was having a girl, I found the majority of my inspiration on Pinterest and Etsy. Once we confirmed the gender, I pulled everything together to create my own look in my mind. I knew what specific pieces I wanted and went through everything with my mom to figure out what she could make and what I would have to do without. I was sure what I wanted the final look to come out as and pieced things together from various different locations. I wanted crisp clean accent items and wanted a more “sophisticated” look.

Where did you find the key elements and fun details?

Key elements such as the furniture came from Walmart.com, Ikea and Babies R Us. Fun accents and little details came from a bunch of different places to include, Hobby Lobby, Target, Michaels and Etsy.

How did you keep your room budget-friendly?

My mom actually hand made most everything in the room. We found the fabric I wanted on fabric.com and I got it 60% off, which was a huge steal since most every where you look sells it for $12 a yard. Once it came in my mom got started and made the crib skirt, window treatments, diaper stacker, changing pad cover, pillows and a beautiful quilt. We got the crib off of Walmart.com and the dresser and side table from Ikea, all of which were pretty inexpensive for the quality we got. The chair was my one major splurge. I knew from nursing my first child that I really wanted a super comfortable chair this time around so I got exactly what I wanted. We had maternity pictures taken by a family friend and I had them printed and framed for decorative accents. I got a couple other decorative accents from places like Michaels, Home Goods and Target, all of which really helped bring everything together.

What do you love most about the room?

OMG, everything. I LOVE her room. I love the colors, how it all came together. I love the pictures all over the room that make it personal. I love just sitting in it, and how girly it looks.

Did anyone else give any input on the room?

My mom helped a lot with bringing everything together for this room and had a ton of ideas for really cute additions, but most of the time I just wanted to keep it simple. My husband helped pick out all the furniture and put everything together, but he gave me the upper hand in most of the design factors and let me do everything how I had envisioned.

What advice would you give to other mamas about how to make their dream room a reality?

Plan your vision in your head and don’t think you have to do everything right away. We took our time getting everything for this room, and I would buy things as I saw them instead of thinking I needed to get everything up front. As the room evolved, a lot of the time my vision shifted and I would change my mind on certain things. I believe this really helped the overall feel and outcome of the room.
