Mother’s Day Letters: Sam’s Mama

Dear Mama,

Words can’t express the feelings I have about our relationship. I’ve always looked at you as a friend. You’re always there for me, supporting me and comforting me in times of need. You’re a shoulder to cry on, and a friend to laugh and joke with. You’ve taught me the importance of being there for your children, and being a responsible parent, but having fun at the same time.

We may have had some rough times in the past —as I know I may have been a little bit of a troublemaker at times. I remember having my bedroom door removed from its frame because we got caught after sneaking alcohol in the house at age 19. At the time, I was angry and thought you were too strict. Now that I’ve grown up a bit, and have my own perspective since being a parent, I can understand and respect your decisions and “punishments.”

But luckily, there weren’t a whole lot of those bad times. And the positive moments we have outweigh the negative, which is why we have such a great relationship.

You’re not only a great mama, you’re a great person overall. You would give anyone the shirt off your back even if it were the last thing you had, and so many people love you for that. You’ve put your time into so many things to help others out, and never asked for anything in return. From coaching a high school dance team —even after I had graduated— because you didn’t want to disappoint the underclassmen, to helping run a little league baseball team or boy scout group, just to be able to spend time with your children.

In addition to being a great mother, you’re also a wonderful grandparent. Emma loves to call you, and gets excited when she sees you, because she knows that any time spent with Grandma equals fun! Matt is still a little young to see that, but soon enough he will! My children are lucky to have you as a grandmother.

I honestly could not imagine life without you, and am so lucky to have you in my life, as a parent and a friend. We have so many more great memories to make, as the kids grow, as I grow. I’m so glad to have been blessed with a great teacher and role model, and I hope to take all that I’ve learned from you to raise great children of my own.

I am who I am, because of you.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I love you so much!

Oh yeah, and Happy Birthday!

Love your favorite daughter,
Samantha

  1. This is so sweet - it truly made my day! You gave us a run for our money at times - yes that is true - but you were no different than many young teenagers - and definately not as bad as many others. But you were also very loving, caring, and the bad combined with the good created the wonderful young woman you are today - stil our daughter - but also a wife and mother. You will experience many events in your future similar to those we experienced as you were growing up. I know you will make the right decisions. You were and are more than my daughter, you are one of my BEST friends - and that will never change. I love you more every day. I am proud of you. Have a happy Mother’s Day!

    Love, Your Mama, Vicki
