My surprise birthday present! A BFP?!

My husband and I had been married for about five months when we decided that we wouldn’t necessarily try to get pregnant, but we wouldn’t prevent it either. So at the end of February 2011, I didn’t refill my prescription for the birth control pill I was taking.

From what I had heard, it would take awhile for my body to get used to not being on birth control anymore after using it for so long. Turns out that wasn’t the case for me!

My best friends and I had been planning a girls’ trip to celebrate us all turning 25. We decided on going to New York City for four days, leaving on May 19. The week leading up to the trip, I was so excited! I began to pack, trying to figure out the perfect outfits that would work for our time away, organize everything perfectly and ensure that I didn’t forget anything.

The one thing that just didn’t seem right was how emotional I was. Every day, something inside me would trigger and the water works would begin. I remember one evening, getting home from work and just crying, explaining to my husband that I didn’t know what was bringing on these emotions.

On May 17, I was expecting to receive my monthly visitor, but she didn’t show. That night, I took a pregnancy test only to have it turn out negative.

Maybe my body was just trying to get back on track?

The next evening, as my husband and I were getting ready to sit down to dinner, I decided to try another test.  I certainly didn’t want to go away on my trip not knowing what was going on with me. I did my business and a faint second line showed up on the test… I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I took the test downstairs, shoved it in my husband’s face and asked

“Do you see one or two lines??”

“I see two. What does that mean?”

I didn’t believe it at first. We ate dinner and I decided that I would wait for a bit, and then take a better test since the first one was a cheap one.

An hour passed and I attempted to finish packing, but my mind was racing a million miles thinking about what this all meant. I took another test, and it was clear as day… a big blue ‘+’.

Positive!

I took the test downstairs to my husband with a big smile on my face and tears in my eyes… “We’re pregnant!” We had a short celebration then realized that we HAD to go and tell our parents since I knew the girls were obviously going to find out during our time in NYC. We didn’t want anyone else knowing until we told our parents.

Luckily, they live right around the corner from each other so we went and shared our exciting news with them. There were lots of hugs, kisses and a few tears.

I don’t think I slept more than a few hours that night. Between the excitement of traveling to NYC and the thought of a tiny little being inside of me, my brain just wouldn’t shut off.

I still had to work on the morning of May 19, and on my drive in I stopped at the drug store to pick up a digital test just to make sure.

As soon as I got into the office, I took the test and saw ‘Positive 2-3 weeks.’ There was no way that test was lying to me!

Later that day, the girls and I met up to begin our road trip to New York. Before we left the city, one of the girls needed to stop at the mall to exchange her money into US funds. I knew that I couldn’t wait any longer and decided to tell them the big news. I sat in the driver’s seat and told them that there had been a slight change of plans to our trip.

“We have one extra person joining us for the weekend,” I said. “I’m pregnant!”

My best friend Linzi had the greatest reaction out of anyone and I wish I had recorded it. She burst into tears, and all four of us got out of the car to hug it out in the parking lot. It’s a moment I will never forget!

We had an incredible birthday celebration in NYC and although I couldn’t participate in the celebratory beverages, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Needless to say, my husband and I weren’t expecting to become pregnant in such a short period of time and as surprised as we were, it’s a great story that we will someday be able to share with our daughter, Cassidy.
