Ever since I could remember, I wanted children; 100 to be exact. So one could imagine how excited I was when I got pregnant.

We first became pregnant in 2009 but unfortunately, I lost that pregnancy. After the initial shock, we decided to pick ourselves up and try again.

We finally succeeded in May of 2010. Seeing the pregnant symbol on the stick was overwhelming and emotional. Were we ready for this journey? You bet we were!!

As my pregnancy went on, I thought long and hard about my birth plan. We attended Lamaze classes and I knew from the start that I wanted an epidural. I thought, ‘why should I suffer?’

My contractions started early in the morning on January 30th. They continued through the afternoon and into the early evening. After not being able to speak through them I decided to go to the hospital and get my epidural.

Once I got to the hospital, I was checked and measuring at almost 9 cm dilated! They quickly admitted me and called my doctor. Once I was situated in the bed, I asked when I could get my epidural the nurse looked at me and said, “I am so sorry but the anesthesiologist is in surgery.”

I replied “ What do you mean he is in surgery? When is he getting out?” Needless to say, I wasn’t getting my epidural and I was scared out of my mind since this was not part of my plan.

I didn’t take any natural birth classes so I had no idea how to breathe through my contractions. Luckily, my mother-in-law is a nurse and delivered all four of her babies naturally. She helped me with the breathing and I finally felt in control.

I was admitted at 10:30 p.m. and was ready to start my journey. I was going to have a baby and nothing could take that feeling away from me. I was going to be a mother; something I’ve ALWAYS wanted.

After eight pushes and four contractions, my beautiful Ava was born at 11:19 p.m. weighing in at 7 lbs 2 oz, 18 ¾ inches long, and she was beautiful.

I felt like Wonder Woman.

I delivered her all by myself with no drugs in less than an hour.

If I could do this, I could do anything!

I looked at my husband with big fat tears in my eyes and said: “I did it, I can’t believe I did it!” Sometimes life goes an entirely different direction then you expect.

I am so thankful I had her naturally with no complications. I plan on having all of my children the same way. God is good!
