Real Mama: Krista Lucas

Krista is one of my oldest and dearest friends— we actually met in kindergarten. I’m completely thrilled that she was happy to be featured as one of our Real Mamas. She’s an amazing mama to her two adorable boys, she throws wonderfully creative birthday parties for them, and she’s a lot more patient than she gives herself credit for!

Tell us a little about yourself…

I am a stay-at-home-mom who is also a photographer (Krista Lucas Photography). I have been married since June of 2000 and we have two boys who are 7 and 4.5!

Where is home?

Sunny southern California.

What are your secrets to balancing your life as a SAHM, a pro-photographer and everything else you manage to squeeze into your day?

I make a lot of lists, live by my calendar and try really hard to do most of my work on the two days my younger son is at school.

Who has been your biggest inspiration?

My friends who are patient mothers. And my own mom too.

What has been the best advice you’ve received as a mama? What do you feel is the best advice, if any, that you’ve given as a mama?

The best advice I’ve received is to take it one day at a time and to say I’m sorry to your kids if you wrong them. It’s so true — the days can be so long, but these babies grow so fast and looking too far ahead is a scary thing!

I also have had to teach my kids to be humble and apologize if they do something wrong by leading by example. They know mama isn’t perfect and makes bad choices sometimes. But if I do, I always say I’m sorry.

Photographing a wedding while 8 months pregnant!

Are you the kind of mama you thought you’d be?

For the most part, yes. I’m not as patient as I hoped I would be, but I’m working on that!

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I can’t imagine having two teenage boys. I think I’ll be broke because they’ll eat us out of house and home! Seriously, I hope to continue photography, either as a business or a hobby. I also think I will go back to school in the next several years to study public health, the other passion I have, so hopefully I’ll be educating people about disease or studying epidemics.

If you could have lunch with anyone famous (dead or alive) who would it be?

I think it would be fun to have lunch with Emma Stone. She seems hilarious and really down to earth.

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

To clone myself!

Were your birth experiences all that you hoped they would be? If you could go back and change anything, what would it be?

I wouldn’t change anything about either one. I had a great doctor the first time who was so good at listening to what I wanted and needed. And I loved having a midwife the second time around. I was definitely less anxious the second time around, which was helpful!

How has your mothering evolved since those early newborn days? Is there anything, thus far, in your approach to mothering that you swore “I’d never do…” and you are?

I swore I’d never bribe my kids. Now I’m the first one to offer XYZ if they’ll just smile for one picture…
