Real Mama: Sara Dale

Tell us a little about yourself…

I am 34 years old. I work as an office administrator and have been doing so for a number of years. I am married to a wonderful man who is truly my best friend. We have been married for almost two years. I knew from early on in life that I wanted to be a mom and was ecstatic to know that we got pregnant very quickly. I enjoy spending time with family and friends and have recently gotten back into running.
Where is home?

My husband, son and I live in New Hamburg, ON, in Canada a small community in Southwestern Ontario.
What are your secrets to balancing your life as a working mama?

I am currently on maternity leave, but it ends in two months. I am trying to strategize how I will manage household duties while spending time with my husband and son. I will know that I won’t be afraid to ask for help. I will learn to manage my time and make sure that I allow myself some ‘me’ time.
Who has been your biggest inspiration?

There hasn’t been any one person who has been a big inspiration. I find inspiration in moms in general. I am amazed with how strong moms really are. My mom was a stay-at-home-mom and made many sacrifices to ensure her kids always had everything they needed. I definitely know that I am very much like my mom in the things I find important in raising my son.
What has been the best advice you’ve received as a mama? What do you feel is the best advice, if any, that you’ve given as a mama?

Truly the best advice I was given is to trust yourself. Only you know what the best thing is for your children. You can be given so many different opinions and advice, but ultimately, the best decision you make is the one you are most comfortable with.

Are you the kind of mama you thought you’d be?

Yes and no. I have surprised myself actually. I am more relaxed about parenting than I expected to be. I allow my son to explore (within reason) and learn the skills on his own time. It amazes me how independent my son really is and am happy to see the personality he has developed.
Where do you see yourself in ten years?

In ten years, I hope to be a mother of three, healthy and happy. I would love to see my family and myself living in the country. Most importantly, I want to see myself surrounded by my family and friends.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Psychic abilities: I would love to see the future to prevent any harm or danger from happening.
Was your birth experience all that you hoped it would be? If you could go back and change anything, what would it be?

I had no expectations about my birth experience. I had to deliver my son almost three weeks early by cesarean section. From 20 weeks on, he was breech, but at my 37 week ultrasound, it was discovered that I was low on amniotic fluid so I had to deliver him early. I was a bit nervous, but because it seemed like everything happened so quickly, I didn’t have time to worry about anything. I don’t think I would really change anything; I consider myself lucky that I didn’t really experience any pain.

How has your mothering evolved since those early newborn days? Is there anything, thus far, in your approach to mothering that you swore “I’d never do…” and you are?

I have learned to go with the flow. Every day is so different from the day before. When I thought I had a great routine, things changed. I went into motherhood with an open mind. I told myself early on that I would just let everyday happen. I have always been a worrier, but now being a mom, I definitely worry more, which was something I never wanted to do.
Do you have a mama mantra? Or something you find yourself repeating over and over when times are tough?

Relax. I find I tell myself all the time to relax.
