Allie’s Gnome Birthday Party

When Mama Say What?! mama Bonnie was deciding what theme to use for her daughter Allie’s first birthday, she came across a gnome costume and the theme was born. I absolutely love this adorable and unique theme.

Bonnie did an amazing job with this party and I know that Allie will look back on it when she is older (well in pictures of course) and think how she had one of the coolest first birthday parties ever.

What inspired the theme of your child’s party?

I love gnomes. If my yard could be filled with gnomes, it would be. My husband, unfortunately, doesn’t share in my gnome affection. He finds them creepy. When I was searching for a theme for Allie’s first birthday, I was originally going to go with a nature-birds-shabby chic theme, much like her nursery.

But then I stumbled upon a gnome Halloween costume and I knew that we had to have a gnome themed party. Allie is a small baby. At 12 months, she was the size of the average nine month old. I like to say, “She’s compact and efficient.” Her face is very impish and she very much fits the perfect “gnome” look.

What was one element of the party that you are particularly proud of?

I was really proud of Allie’s outfit. I made her dress at the last minute. I bought her gnome hat on Etsy, and she looked like the perfect little gnome.

Did you work with any vendors? If so, who? And what did you like about them?

Yes! I used to be an event planner, and even though I have the skill to do most things needed for a party, I am only one woman.

Invitation suite- I commissioned Alex Tebow Designs to make Allie’s invitation suite. She made invitations, pennant flags and favor tags. I cannot say enough good things about Alex Tebow Designs. Everything was perfect.

Favors- I ordered some gnome cookies to use as party favors from The Cookie Maven also on Etsy.

Cake- I ordered her cake from Nadia Cakes in Palmdale, CA. I had them make a gnome with Allie’s eye and hair colors for the top to match our theme. Their cakes are delicious, but pricey. I wish I had known that you have to be VERY specific about every little detail on the order. I asked them to make a tan and white mushroom smash cake with dots and they forgot the dots and the white stem. It ended up looking like something inappropriate for a 1st birthday party, but everyone got a good laugh out of that! They also didn’t make the birthday signage until I asked for it at the last minute. So make sure every little detail is on the contract.

Linens- I got the linens from Linen Table Cloth. They’re a great linen company.

What was your favorite moment/part of the party?

My favorite moment was when everyone walked into the backyard and noticed all of my hard work. It really boosted my self-esteem and made me feel great.

What was your birthday girl’s favorite part?

Allie’s favorite part was her impromptu after-cake bath. She loves taking baths and she seemed to get a kick out of everyone being around while she bathed.

Can you give any advice to mamas that are planning a party for their little one?

My best advice is to start early - really early. A lot of bakeries require three months or more lead time, especially during wedding season. If you’re going to have a big blowout for your little one’s first birthday, you should start planning when they are six months old so you can leisurely complete tasks without stressing too much.

Budget: $$$$$
