Riley’s DIY Tangled Birthday Party

My sister-in-law is an amazing stay-at-home-mom of two wonderful kiddos. While her kids are napping, she dedicates time to her new passion: being crafty!

This awesome mama put together an inspiring DIY birthday party for her daughter’s third birthday. It’s clear that she’s quite talented, and her love for saving money and doing all things DIY are much like mine!

Check out how she transformed her house and backyard into Rapunzel’s playground for this “Tangled” themed party.

What inspired the theme of your child’s party?

Riley had been talking about her birthday party for MONTHS! She decided she wanted a Rapunzel themed party after the Easter bunny brought her a Rapunzel dress and the movie “Tangled.” She’s a planner like her mama!

Even though she just turned three, she’s already talking about having a Minnie Mouse party when she turns four.

What was one element of the party that you are particularly proud of?

I LOVE how the favors turned out! I found a fabulous tutorial on Pinterest and made special Rapunzel braids for all of the girls. Riley’s braid was slightly more elaborate, with a crown of flowers adorning her head.

Figuring out what to do for the boys took a little more effort. There really weren’t a whole lot of ideas so I had a really hard time coming up with something. I settled on a “ruffian” theme for them and collected swords, eye patches and “fugly” teeth from iParty and the local dollar store.

I wanted to do something equally as special as the Rapunzel hair for the boys so I made Viking hats out of cardboard, duct tape and masking tape. I followed a tutorial online and had no idea how they would turn out, but they ended up being so cute! The kids were ecstatic about them, and so was I.

The other part of the party that I really took pride in was all of the touches that went into the décor.

I made the cupcake toppers and the cupcake stands, along with the “Happy Birthday” banner that hung outside. I just got a Cricut machine and am having a lot of fun learning how to use it!

A lot of the favors and décor are now for sale in my Etsy shop. Feel free to check it out!

Did you work with any vendors? If so, who? And what did you like about them?

We didn’t work with too many vendors because I wanted to do a lot of DIY projects to add my own twists, and to keep costs down. We rented a princess moon bouncer from DifferRentals. It was our big splurge for the party— Riley had desperately wanted one. When we told her it was too expensive, she offered to pay for it with her “own money.” How can you turn that down? DifferRentals was great to work with, and the bouncer was a big hit.

Our wonderful sister-in-law, Mary Ellen, did our photography. She always does such an amazing job.

I baked the cupcakes myself. My kids cannot eat gluten, soy or dairy, so our days of buying fabulous bakery cakes are over. We discovered Better Batter vanilla cake mix, and it is phenomenal! I highly recommend this mix to anyone with food allergies. So many of our guests complimented the cupcakes and had NO IDEA that they were gluten free! For those of you on a gluten-free diet, you know that is the best compliment ever! You have to order it online.

What was your favorite moment of the party?

My favorite moment was bringing Riley outside once everything was set up and seeing her entire face light up. She was so excited for her party and came over and gave me a great big hug. It made all of our hard work worth it.

What was your birthday girl’s favorite part?

Although she loved her bounce house, the Rapunzel decor and having all of her loved ones in one place, I think her favorite part was eating the cupcakes! She may look like her daddy, but she got her sweet tooth from her mama.

Can you give any advice to mamas that are planning a party for their little one?

We wanted to give Riley the party of her dreams without killing our bank account. By doing all of the decor, food, cupcakes and favors ourselves we saved A LOT of money. If you have the time and are even slightly crafty, all I can say is PINTEREST, PINTEREST, PINTEREST! There are so many wonderful ideas and resources out there. Go with what makes your child happy and run with it! We might have gone slightly overboard, but seeing our daughter so happy was worth all of our time and hard work.

$$$- 301- 450 (darned moon bouncer!!)
